Shakira Mebarak was born on February 2, 1977 in Barranquilla, Colombia. Shakira wrote her first poem, entitled "La Rosa De Cristal" ("The Crystal Rose") when she was only 4 years old. As she was growing up, she was fascinated watching her father writing stories on a typewriter, and asked for one as a Christmas gift. She got her wish at age 7 and continued writing poetry. These poems eventually evolved into songs. Shakira's debut album, Magia, was recorded with Sony Music in 1991, when she was only 14 years old. In 2006, Shakira enjoyed tremendous success with a single from Oral Fixation, Vol. 2 featuring Wyclef Jean ‘Hips Don't Lie’. The song proved to be Shakira's first chart-topper in the UK and the U.S., leading to a worldwide tour that lasted over a year and covered 4 continents.
